Art Davis
Art Davis studied piano as a child, then tuba. He won first prize for tuba in a
national competition, switched from tuba to double bass in 1951, and continued
his musical studies at the Juilliard School, which led him to play in symphonic
circles. In 1958, Max Roach called on him for a one-year collaboration, before
he joined Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra (1959-1961); at the time, Lalo Schifrin
was playing piano in the band, which toured Europe. During his contract with
Dizzy Gillespie, Art Davis was called upon by many musicians: Gigy Grice, Ahmad
Jamal, Clark Terry, Roland Kirk, ...
