Born Stephen James Wilkinson on 4 December 1978 in Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands, England, Bibio became associated with the folktronica movement of the mid-2000s, marrying electronics with folk. He discovered an affinity for adventurous music during his sonic arts studies at Middlesex University and it was here that he first began experimenting with his own sound, making lo-fi recordings on vintage analogue equipment while playing around with fingerpicking and unconventional guitar techniques.
