Daughter of tenor Mario Altéry (1892-1974), soprano Mathé Altéry made a name for herself with her wide repertoire of arias and songs. Born Marie-Thérèse Altare in Paris on September 12, 1927, she began singing at a very early age in Cherbourg, where she was already earning the nickname of the "Cherbourg nightingale". After singing lessons, she made her debut as a chorister at the Théâtre du Châtelet in 1950 in the operetta Annie du far-west, and was noticed at a singing competition in Deauville by the conductor Raymond Legrand, with whom she recorded the song for René Char's film...
