Born on February 2, 1957 in Bône, Algeria, Philippe Baranès arrived in France at
the age of ten in 1967. It was here that he first came into contact with music,
taking music theory lessons and learning to play the violin and guitar.
Gradually attracted to the practical side of music, he discovered percussion and
drums, and formed a group at thirteen, Terre Neuve, then another at sixteen, Les
Diam's. These early experiences enabled him to get used to the demands of
